Malika Rachelle Designs was launched while I, Malika Green, was living and working in Trinidad and Tobago. Jewelry creation had been a hobby for over a decade while I was working as a music educator, performer and composer. In Trinidad I had the opportunity to apprentice with a master jeweler. I eventually become a bench jeweler for two years, learning traditional jewelry fabrication techniques. The brand was launched in June 2020.
These designs represent fragments of memories from many beautiful places and the natural flora or fauna I admired. Customers will often say pieces remind them of something. This is how our memory plays with us. For me it takes the texture or shape that made me fall in love with a thing and I hone in on that. You’ll see tree bark, shells of various kinds, leaves and flowers. The textures are meant to be touched. After returning to the US I learned wax carving and a new approach to design was ignited. I now enjoy creating pieces that are similar yet not exactly same, with intense textures and organic shapes in my 250 sq ft Baltimore, MD art studio.
Aquatic, organic, jazzy with antique inspirations. Each piece is like a performance of a music cover revamped a million times making each performance its own nuanced experience. My work is jazz - evolving yet familiar and influenced by different memories from my cultural and genetic DNA. As no two performances are the same so too with jewelry - each wax-carved, sculpted and cast piece is unique in its nuance of shape and texture, before being cast..
